Using Stuff: A Creative Approach to Movie Posters

Reconstructing Movie Posters with Everyday Objects

The "Using Stuff" project, created by designer Juyoung Hwang, takes a unique approach to movie posters by using various shapes and silhouettes of everyday objects. Inspired by the intrinsic form and function of objects, Hwang parodies movies and combines them with current social issues or existing movie signatures. The result is a collection of thought-provoking and visually captivating artworks.

The "Using Stuff" project aims to create a contrast between the characteristics of objects and their original functions. By directly using objects, their size and original functions become accessible, allowing viewers to see them from a different perspective. Hwang then finds a way to link these objects with recent social issues or other related content, creating a narrative that sparks both reflection and enjoyment.

Each movie poster in the "Using Stuff" project is meticulously crafted. Hwang starts by sketching the design and placing the objects on top. The set work is then photographed, and the final visualization is done digitally using design tools like Photoshop and Illustrator. The use of vivid colors and simple backgrounds allows the viewers to focus on the story and themes of the artworks.

One of the strengths of the "Using Stuff" project is its ability to engage viewers in critical thinking. Through the combination of objects and movie references, Hwang prompts viewers to contemplate current problematic issues or simply enjoy the clever fusion of different elements. The artworks serve as a reminder of recurring problems and events, ensuring that viewers do not forget them easily.

These artworks are not only visually appealing but also interactive. They can be optimized for the web and easily shared on social media platforms. Hwang envisions the artworks being accessible to anyone, sparking conversations and discussions. Additionally, the artworks can be collected as NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and potentially exhibited in both digital and offline spaces.

The "Using Stuff" project started in March 2016 in Incheon and is still ongoing. It has been exhibited in various locations, including Yeonsu-gu, Incheon in March 2017 and Jung-gu, Incheon in July 2020. The project continues to evolve and captivate audiences with its innovative approach to movie posters.

Recently, the "Using Stuff" project was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category. This prestigious award recognizes the project's outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, as well as its contribution to improving the quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.

The "Using Stuff" project by Juyoung Hwang is a testament to the power of creativity and imagination. Through the clever use of everyday objects and movie references, Hwang creates visually striking artworks that engage viewers and provoke thought. It is a project that showcases the intersection of art, design, and technology, leaving a lasting impression on those who encounter it.
